The Indiana Gaming Commission last week authorized the state’s casinos and mobile sports wagering operators to offer betting lines on seven Winter Olympic events. Those are alpine skiing, bobsled, cross-country skiing, curling, ice hockey, short-track speed skating and speed skating, The (Northwest Indiana) Times reported.
Wagering for some Olympic events will take planning since they will take place in China several hours before they are broadcast on delay in the U.S. The Beijing games are scheduled to run Feb 4-20.
Sports wagering operators aren’t required to accept bets on all the events, but many offer a wide variety of betting options since Indiana legalized sports wagering in 2019.
Last year, Indiana sportsbooks generated $3.8 billion in online and retail wagers, up 116% from 2020.
PlayIndiana.com said sportsbooks generated $29 million in state taxes for the year.
And Indiana’s sportsbooks closed 2021 with another busy month, just shy of the record set in November. Based on data from the Indiana Gaming Commission, sports bettors placed more than $460 million in wagers in December, down from the November handle of $463.7 million.
December’s winnings produced $25.8 million in taxable revenue, yielding $2.5 million in state taxes.
