Talk to a financial planner before your switch from traditional medicare to a medicare advantage plan. The main reason these plans are cheaper is that the lifetime benefits are severely capped. I think once you switch, you can’t switch back.
When these people are selling these plans, they never mention any downsides. The devil is in the details.
As one healthcare worker described it to me: “These are the devil. You cannot get better coverage than Medicare.” And, wouldn’t this statement logically include all private insurers: “In a 2018 report, the inspector general at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said some private plans have an incentive to deny claims ‘in an attempt to increase their profits.'”
Insurance is supposed to be “pooled risk.” You need LOTS of healthy people in the largest pool of people we can create.
Good article and it explains why I plan on keeping traditional Medicare. Why would I trade it for plans that seems a lot like the worst of the group health insurance I have had in the past.
The choice between traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans is definitely one that needs to be done carefully. Having said that, I am on the AARP Advantage plan and love it. All my doctors, my dentist, and my optometrist accept the coverage. I am financially “rewarded” when I get my annual exam, my flu shot, and when I walk 7500 steps a day. They provide a free Fitbit tracker every 2 years and free gym memberships at multiple gyms in Indpls. They also allow me to order $40 of supplies from their pharmacy catalogue every quarter for free. Meanwhile, my husband is on the traditional Medicare plan and does not intend to change. It’s a personal choice for which you should weigh all the pros and cons.
Traditional Medicare is not driven by profit. Medicare Advantage is, meaning that there is constant pressure to limit and minimize spending on patient care. It was an easy decision.
