That’s an excellent point. Have you tried to find a new car with a manual transmission, no air conditioning, and non-power windows? For all practical purposes, they aren’t available….yet how many people somehow managed to get by with just such a car for decades?
I’ve wondered about this myself. Certainly some of it is that people have become accustomed to such luxuries to the point of not considering them luxuries anymore. However, I’ve wondered how much more expensive it really is to put in power windows these days. There is a cost to manufacturing when you offer multiple options. That is, you have to have different supply chains for window motor parts and hand crank parts, different assembly processes for each including different training, etc. etc. I guess the point is that there would need to be clearly enough demand to justify creating dedicated assembly lines and supply chains for a vehicle with only crank windows, and even then I wonder how much it would really take off the price of a car these days.
I could live without an automatic transmission or power windows, but no A/C? Forget it!
