Vince Caponi, CEO of Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health, will take charge of hospitals in Wisconsin that are also owned by St. Vincent’s parent organization, Ascension Health.

The St. Louis-based Catholic hospital system operates 19 hospitals in Indiana and three more in Wisconsin, clustered near Milwaukee. Caponi will now oversee all of them.

Since taking charge of St. Vincent Health in 1998, Caponi has overseen the acquisition of nine hospitals and the Care Group, a large Indianapolis-based physician practice, as well as an ownership stake in the Indianapolis Orthopaedic Hospital.

Prior to joining St. Vincent Health, Caponi was CEO of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. He has also served as CEO of St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta, Ga., and United Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Mich.

Caponi holds a master’s degree in health care administration from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University.

In Wisconsin, Ascension Health operates Columbia St. Mary’s Health System in Milwaukee, which is comprised of three hospitals, 65 community clinics, the Columbia College of Nursing, a partnership with the Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin, and five urgent care centers.
