The 2010 rankings released by the Council for Aid to Education rank IU first in the Big Ten, first among public universities and 10th in the nation in voluntary backing with $342 million in gifts and non-governmental research grant funds. That represents a 38.5-percent increase from 2009.
IU president Michael McRobbie says the increased level of support in spite of the recession indicates "the deep level of commitment and confidence" that alumni and donors have in the university.
The top three ranked schools were Stanford University, Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University.
Overall, charitable contributions to colleges and universities in the United States increased 0.5 percent in 2010, reaching $28 billion. That's the same amount given in 2006.
