The USA Cricket Association announced Friday that its national men’s championships will be held in Indianapolis for three years beginning in 2014.

The announcement coincides with Mayor Greg Ballard’s cricket initiative, which dates back to 2009, and the $6 million Indianapolis World Sports Park, which is being designed on the far-east side for cricket, lacrosse and hurling, among other sports.

USA Cricket said that bringing the tournament to Indianapolis was a “direct result” of new leadership at the association, as well as a decision by the International Cricket Council to provide additional backing to help grow the sport within the United States.

“2013 has heralded a new positive direction for cricket in North America with opportunities for cricket to unite and realize its potential as a sport for all Americans,” USA Cricket CEO Darren Beazley said in a written statement.

IBJ reported Tuesday that USA Cricket hosted zero national tournaments in 2012 and also lost funding from the International Cricket Council because it violated governance rules, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Next year’s tournament in Indianapolis is set for late August and would be the first event played at the new park.
