The World Famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail Eating Championship will be part of the Georgia Street festivities prior to the third annual Big Ten football championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium.
"On the same day as the Big Ten Football Championship, fans will be able to experience the ultimate eating contest," said St. Elmo co-owner Craig Huse in a prepared statement. "It will be staggering to see how many pounds of shrimp that the eaters can devour while experiencing the sinus-clearing, head rush imparted by our St. Elmo Cocktail Sauce."
The event will be sanctioned by Major League Eating, the world organization that oversees professional eating contests. The New York-based group conducts about 80 competitions annually, including the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which is broadcast live by ESPN and drew 40,000 spectators to Coney Island, N.Y., this year.
Chestnut has won seven straight world hot-dog eating titles and holds world records in numerous food-eating categories, including Twinkies, hard-boiled eggs, ice cream and ribs.
The shrimp cocktail category is a new MLE competition. Eaters will have eight minutes to consume as many of St. Elmo's horseradish-laden shrimp cocktails as possible. The winner will claim $1,000 of a $2,000 purse.
