Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. bested its highest-ever donation to United Way in 2013 by donating $12.7 million to the not-for-profit organization on Wednesday.

This year’s gift represented the giving of employees and retirees of Lilly and subsidiary Elanco Animal Health in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, plus a dollar-for-dollar matching contribution from the Lilly Foundation, the pharmaceutical firm’s private philanthropic arm. Lilly’s gift in 2013 amounted to $12.6 million, the company’s largest United Way contribution to that point.

"Our annual United Way fund-raising initiative is one very effective way to make life better for people in the communities where we live and work,” said Lilly CEO John Lechleiter, who also is the chair of United Way Worldwide’s Board of Trustees.

The funds will support the United Way of Central Indiana and other United Ways nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

Lilly employees also have volunteered more than 171,000 hours so far this year through initiatives including the Lilly Global Day of Service, an annual day of community and charitable projects, the firm said. Additionally, employees supported BackPack Attack and the Goodwill Clothing Drive by donating school supplies, clothing, and other necessities.
