Manufacturer Royal Interpack North America Inc., a subsidiary of Thailand-based Royal Group, announced plans Tuesday to spend $11.9 million to open a plant in Anderson that will employ 135 workers by the end of 2018.

RPNA, which makes rigid food packaging out of recycled plastic, said it will lease, renovate and equip a 40,000-square-foot plant at 3619 W. 73rd St. and have it operational by late April.

Initially, the facility is expected to produce about 24 million pounds of clam shell containers annually for fruits, vegetables, and bakery, deli and other food-service items that are sold to processors. Capacity should increase to fifty million pounds by 2016.

The company said it has already begun hiring machine operators and accountants for the new plant.

The Anderson plant will be RPNA's first in the Midwest. The four-year-old company has U.S. operations in Riverside, California, where it employs more than 100 workers at a bottle recycling plant and an extrusion and thermoforming operation.

“Indiana is a key strategic location in our expansion plans due to its proximity and logistical access to target markets,” said Royal Group CEO Visanu Chawla in a written statement.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. said it offered RPNA up to $675,500 in performance-based tax credits based on the job-creation plans. The city of Anderson will consider additional incentives.
