Duke Energy Indiana has filled its president’s position from within, elevating Melody Birmingham-Byrd to the electricity provider’s top spot.

Duke Energy Indiana presidentMelody Birmingham-Byrd

Birmingham-Byrd, 43, replaces Doug Esamann, who was promoted to president of parent firm Duke Energy Corp.’s Midwest and Florida regions, as well as to corporate executive vice president. Both Birmingham-Byrd and Esamann started their new jobs June 1.

Birmingham-Byrd previously served as senior vice president of Midwest delivery operations for Duke Energy Indiana. In that position, she managed the company’s power distribution system in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership and management from Purdue University. She also has a master’s in business administration from national for-profit educator Strayer University.

Prior to the merger between Duke Energy Corp. and Progress Energy in 2012, she served as vice president of the southern region for Progress Energy Carolinas.

Duke Energy Indiana’s operations provide electricity to about 810,000 customers in a 23,000-square-mile service area, making it the state’s largest electric supplier.
