A Los Angeles-based online health foods and natural products company plans to spend $8 million on a fulfillment center it opened last month in Batesville, creating up to 250 jobs by the end of 2018.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. said Monday that Thrive Market is renovating and equipping a vacant 300,000-square-foot facility about 70 miles southeast of Indianapolis. The building was previously used by General Electric Lighting, which closed in January.

When fully operational, the center will serve about two-thirds of Thrive Market’s customers in 35 states in the Midwest and Eastern United States.

The Herald-Tribune of Bloomington said Thrive Market had hired 50 workers as of Sept. 25 and was already shipping products, well ahead of schedule.

The 11-month-old company expects the center to make two-day shipping possible to 90 percent of its membership base.

The IEDC said it offered Thrive Market up to $1.25 million in conditional tax credits and up to $50,000 in training grants based on the job-creation plans.

The city of Batesville is set to provide additional incentives, including $150,000 in development grants and up to $500,000 in tax-increment financing.

Thrive Market says it offers 3,500 healthy foods and natural products from more than 400 brands at wholesale prices through its membership model. Products include paleo, gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, nut-free and allergen-free items.
