Purdue University plans to break ground this week on an $8.8 million horse diagnostic and surgical center near the Indiana Grand Racing and Casino in Shelbyville.

The university announced plans for the project in May.

The state-of-the-art Centaur Regional Equine Diagnostic and Surgical Center will provide health services to horses and serve as a working laboratory to support the College of Veterinary Medicine's student learning and research.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the racetrack. Purdue President Mitch Daniels will speak along with Willie Reed, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The center will be built on land purchased by Purdue Research Foundation with $2.3 million in support from Shelby County and city of Shelbyville. Centaur Gaming, which owns and operates the track, has pledged $3.1 million to name the facility.
