The city of Lansing, Michigan, has chosen a $24.4 million proposal from Indianapolis-based TWG Development LLC to redevelop the former Michigan School for the Blind into a mix of affordable and senior housing.

TWG plans 72 low-income apartments and 60 senior units, according to the Lansing State Journal. The developer will seek federal tax credits administered by the state of Michigan to help fund the project and hopes to begin work in the fall.

“We will treat this as if it is in our own back yard,” TWG CEO Joe Whitsett told the newspaper.

The campus sits on 40 acres and has sat vacant since closing in 1995. Under TWG’s plans, the administration and high school buildings would be saved and redeveloped into senior housing, and the auditorium demolished, the newspaper said.

TWG would build a four-story structure on the campus perimeter to house the 72 apartments.

The Michigan School for the Blind moved from Flint to Lansing in 1880. The administration building, constructed of brick and limestone, originally housed the entire student body and school offices.

TWG has completed 20 apartment projects since its founding in 2007 and has 13 under construction in Indiana, Ohio and Iowa.•
