"Dance is a Contact Sport”

I was lucky enough to have a sneak peek at part of Dance Kaleidoscope’s new program and was awed by both the silly and the sublime elements in “False Start, Pass Interference,” a new piece choreographed by Stephanie Martinez. In it, sports are blurred with spectators, with marching bands, and even with commercials into a playful, athletic, moving and wildly original dance piece. The program also includes pieces by David Hochoy and Keisha Lelama. June 1-4  Indiana Repertory Theatre  Details

“Spring Awakening”

For years, Summer Stock Stage has been offering local students a chance hone their theatrical skills with full productions of popular musicals. Now, it’s exploring new territory with a programming using local pros teamed with college-aged performers. First up: the edgy Broadway hit featuring troubled youth, sexual exploration, and song titles that would get caught in your internet content filter if I included them here. June 1-18 Indy Fringe Building. Details

John Hartford Memorial Festival

The laid-back festival, named in honor of the “newgrass” singer/songwriter, returns with music on three stages. Headliners this time around include Steep Canyon Rangers, The Travelin’ McCourys, and the Jeff Austin Band. May 31-June 3 Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground, Bean Blossom  Details
