St. Vincent Health plans to cut 111 jobs in its billing operations this summer, including 85 in Indianapolis, as it outsources those duties to a Chicago-based company.

The health system with 19 hospitals in Indiana notified the state Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday that the cuts will come from locations in Indianapolis, Evansville, Anderson, Kokomo and Salem. The cuts will take place in July and August.

The jobs affected will include patient access representatives, insurance specialists, medical records transcriptionists, and information management workers.

In May, St. Vincent’s parent firm, St. Louis-based Ascension, expanded its business agreement with R1 RCM Inc., based in Chicago, allowing the outsourcing specialist to increase “net patient revenue” it manages by $1.5 billion. The company, known as R1, serves more than 5,000 physicians and manages more than $1.8 billion in patient revenues for them.

St. Vincent said some affected workers would remain in their local facilities, but some would be moved to an unspecified “shared service site.” The affected Indianapolis-based workers are located at 10330 N. Meridian St.

“It is our goal to retain the associates who have been impacted by this change,” St. Vincent spokeswoman Tangela Floyd said in an email to IBJ.

Employees who decline to move to another location will be given severance packages, she said.
