Holcomb said in a statement Monday that the trip is intended to strengthen relationships and encourage continued investment and trade with the state's largest foreign investor.
More than 280 Japanese businesses operate in Indiana, making the state's relationship with Japan "crucial to our economy," he said. Those businesses support more than 58,000 jobs in the state.
Plans call for leaving Indiana on Sept. 7 and returning Sept. 15. Holcomb will travel to Tokyo, Nagoya and Tochigi Prefecture. He plans to meet with Japanese government officials, national business chambers and executives of Japanese companies with operations in Indiana, including Subaru, Toyota and Honda.
Holcomb also will participate in the Midwest U.S.-Japan Association Conference, an annual meeting involving government representatives from 10 Midwest states and Japan.
Indiana exports $1.6 billion of Hoosier-made goods to Japan annually, making it the state's fifth-largest export location in the world.
Indiana Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger will be among those making the trip, which will be paid for through private donations to the Indiana Economic Development Foundation.
