The operator of a refrigerated warehouse and logistic-services facility in Lebanon is planning to spend $29 million on a major expansion.

New Jersey-based U.S. Cold Storage plans to add 100,000 square feet to its existing 200,000-square-foot facility in the Lebanon Business Park off Interstate 65.

The expansion will be used to add more storage capacity for the perishable food industry. The Lebanon facility currently has 6.3 million cubic feet of convertible temperature space, 24,300 racked pallets of varying heights and 32 dock doors.

The company said it plans to add 30 employees by 2021 as part of the project. The average wage will be close to $17 per hour, but that does not include benefits. U.S. Cold Storage already has 73 full-time employees in Lebanon.

The Lebanon City Council unanimously approved real and personal property tax abatements for the company Monday night. The four-year personal property abatement is expected to save U.S. Cold Storage a total of $320,000, and the five-year real property abatement should save the company slightly more than $1 million.

The Boone County city expects to collect about $2.6 million in taxes from U.S. Cold Storage over the next 10 years.

U.S. Cold Storage has 38 facilities in 13 states with a total of 2,500 employees. The Lebanon location, which opened in 2008, is its only one in the state.
