A new state senator has been sworn in to replace a Republican who resigned for a job in Washington, D.C.

Brian Buchanan took the oath Monday from Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush. Republican precinct committee members picked the former Boone County councilman last month to fill the vacancy left by then-Senate majority leader Brandt Hershman.

Buchanan represents a Senate district sprawling across six counties from near Indianapolis northwest to the Lafayette area.

Hershman resigned in December to join a law firm in Washington. His Senate term runs until the 2020 election.

Buchanan, who lives in Lebanon, received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Purdue University. In addition to public service, he works for his family’s trucking logistics business, Buchanan Hauling and Rigging Inc. He previously served as executive director of the Indiana FFA Foundation.

In December, Republicans who control the Senate elevated two lawmakers to leadership posts that were vacated by Hershman.

Sen. Rodric Bray of Martinsville was named as the majority floor leader, which is the No. 2 position in Senate leadership. Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle became chairman of the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee, which Hershman previously led.
