Rail transportation helped Eastern Europeans settle in Haughville, just west of downtown, in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Many were Slovenians, who worked in area foundries and factories. Joe Zeunik, part of a family of Slovenian immigrants, sold dry goods, hardware and groceries at 777 Haugh St. The Indiana Historical Society estimates this picture of Joe Zeunik’s Groceries & Meats was taken in the 1930s. Watch for a story next week about how community leaders are trying to rebuild the Haughville neighborhood.
