Yes, “Rent” — the movie — already played movie theaters (and didn’t do particularly well). But now it looks like it’s getting another shot. Not a second run of the film, though. This will be a from-the-stage performance of the hit musical shown at cineplexes a la recent opera productions.
With “Legally Blonde” a hit when broadcast on MTV and other projects in talks, this could mean greater access for audiences to shows without having to visit Manhattan.
An added bonus: the preservation of original stage performances (would love to have the chance to watch the original “Guys and Dolls” or “A Streetcar Named Desire,” even if they didn’t have cinematic bells and whistles, wouldn’t you?)
No, it’s not the same as seeing them live. But readers of this blog know I’m a fan of shows reaching wider audiences. Sony Pictures, the folks behind the “Rent” screening are working on other similar projects including, according to EW.com, a Cirques du Soleil show.
