My township, Clay Township, barely has a website (I had to go digging pretty far down in the search results) and doesn’t mention poverty relief assistance anywhere on the website.
Center Township in Marion County is notorious for its excessive bank account. The late Julia Carson, when trustee, let that fund grow without regard to the needy. They also bought property and buildings which is not even part of the trustee’s responsibility. Time to use that money more effectively and transparently. At $23 Million, Center Township could dramatically reduce the homeless population.
Another function of township governments in Indiana is maintenance of abandoned cemeteries. There is no consistency from township to township, some are impeccably taken care of others are horrible. A lot of these township responsibilities were set-up at a time (1800’s) when residents of a largely rural state had limited transportation and access to government services. It is time for many of these functions to be moved to the county level, especially in urban areas to insure consistency.
The issue of the efficiency of and need for township government (or the lack thereof) comes up again and again but there is never any action. The reason is grassroots politics, meaning local power, not good governance. It’s long past time for township government to go away but our do nothing legislature will keep it alive and well while they focus on passing laws about genitalia, bathrooms and extra wide streets.
Using the Keenan-Shepherd report would be a start.
