3 thoughts on “State considers incentives to lure attorneys to ‘legal deserts’

  1. Maybe the fix is investing in Indiana’s education system so that more Indiana kids can get educated and attend Indiana colleges and maybe, just maybe, stay home.

Or make home a place they want to stay, not a place they want to flee.

  2. One reason lawyers do not flock to rural counties to practice is that there is not enough business there. I once spoke to a judge in one of the rural counties at a bar function. I was surprised at how light her docket was. If there is enough business in a rural county to justify the expense, lawyers in neighboring counties would have opened satellite offices. But the main reason Indiana has so many so-called “legal deserts” is that Indiana has more counties per square mile than any other state in the U.S. If most of these “rural counties” were part of a larger neighboring county, there would be no legal desert in the combined county. If you really want to see a rural county, go out to a large Western state, where some people might have to drive an hour or more to get to a lawyer, doctor, or even a supermarket. I would suspect that there is no one in an Indiana “rural county” who is less than a 30 minute drive to a lawyer, albeit in a neighboring county. I live in Hamilton County, but if I want to see a lawyer in downtown Indy, I will have to drive 45 minutes to see the lawyer.
