The John Mellencamp/Stephen King musical "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County" is still on the road…a road that has finally circled to New York City. The tour played the Beacon Theatre for one night, Nov. 24, on its way to upcoming performances in Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
By the sound of the reviews, the show doesn't sound all that stronger than when the tour launched in Bloomington in Oct. of 2013 (see my review here).
While the tastemaking New York Times was enthusiastic about Mellencamp's "skillfully turned songs" and new star Gina Gershon who "sings with an authentic yearning twang and brings a slightly soiled glamour," critic Charles Isherwood found the project "muddled" and King's book "convoluted."
