Priority list: David Sedaris, Twyla Tharp, more

It's not all about tricks and treats this week. Well, in fact, there are actually plenty of A&E treats. Here's a starter list.

There aren’t many writers who can consistently sell out concert halls these days. On the other hand, there’s David Sedaris, following in the footsteps of Charles Dickens and Mark Twain as he packs venues with eager listeners.

Ann Katz Festival of Books

This year’s event includes a master class with drummer Kenny Aronoff, a celebration of Dr. Seuss, a performance by Dance Kaleidoscope, a Micky’s Corner chat with author Elizabeth Kraft Taylor, and screenings of Heartland Award-Winning Shorts. I’ll be there on Nov. 3 for a local author panel with Dan Wakefield, Barbara Shoup, and Jeff Knurek.

Twyla Tharp Dance Company

The 50th anniversary of the Indiana native’s acclaimed dance company is celebrated with a tour of two new works: one set to Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” and the other fueled by the jazz music of Henry Butler and Steve Bernstein.

Also this week

The American Pianists Association presents Garrick Ohlsson Nov. 1 at the Indiana Landmarks Center.

Bollywood Masala Orchestra, subtitled Spirit of India, features bold costumes, a brass band, vocalists and a trio of dancers Nov. 1 at the Palladium.

“Dia de los Muertos," Nov. 1 at the Indiana State Museum, is Encore Vocal Arts' musical tribute to the southern Mexican celebration. Pre-show activities—to the sounds of a mariachi band—include face painting and sugar-skull making.

Costumes are encouraged for "Haunted Hilbert," a special event Oct. 30 benefiting Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra education programs.
