Priority list includes sculptural homecoming, plus the best of Dig IN 2016

Before I get to my weekly priority list, here’s a weekend recap:

I’ve already written about the Adam Pascal/Anthony Rapp concert at the Cabaret (see review here). Afterwards, I spent some time at the IN Light IN Festival but limited mobility kept me from seeing all of the work so I’ll refrain from offering an opinion.

On Sunday, I joined the crowd at Dig IN: Taste of Indiana at Military Park, where my favorite sampled dish was the Latin Shrimp & Grits crafted by chef Ricky Martinez of Delicia.

Rounding out my top five, in no particular order: Northside Social’s Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese, Monon Food Company’s Beet Taco w/ Goat Cheese Sauce, Local Eatery and Pub’s Watermelon Soup w/ pIckled Rind Relish, and R2Go’s Cobb Salad Stuffed Indiana Tomato.

And now, let’s look forward to some of this week’s promising events.

“Don Gummer: Home Again”

The Cultural Trail gets its first major exhibition with this show, featuring eight works by the sculptor and former Hoosier. A Herron School of Art grad, Gummer work has been collected in museums around the world and I’m trying real hard not to mention that he’s Meryl Streep’s husband. OK, I failed. Still, Gummer is an artist with no need to grab anyone’s coattails. Aug. 31-Aug. 7, 2017 Indianapolis Cultural Trail  Details

“Ann”

Cardinal Stage, Bloomington’s professional theater company, launches its 10^th season with this one-woman show about Texas Governor Ann Richards. Diane Kondrat, a local acting favorite who moved west, returns to take on the role. Sept. 1-9 Ivy Tech Waldron Auditorium, Bloomington Details

Start with Art

OK, it’s technically not an art event, but it is an annual celebration of both the arts in Indianapolis and also the supporters who help make things possible. The keynote address this time around comes from Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. The luncheon is also the first opportunity for you to snag a copy of the IBJ A&E Season Preview, which will be packed into the Aug. 5 issue. Aug. 31  Indianapolis Marriott Downtown  Details 

Also this week

The Jazz Kitchen’s 20^th annual Labor Day Street Fair Sept. 5 features some of Indy’s most reliable and talented jazz artists, including Clifford Ratliff and Rob Dixon.

IDADA First Friday links together gallery openings throughout downtown Sept. 2.

Black Sabbath brings its “The End” tour to Klipsch Music Center Sept. 2.
