Potential highlights for the week of March 13-19:
Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone
Jazz legend Burton teams with former student Ozone for vibes/piano duets. If that’s not enough reason, consider that Burton, a native of Anderson, IN, has announced that he is retiring after his current series of gigs. March 17 Jazz Kitchen Details
“King Charles III”
The plotting is decidedly Shakespearean and the sensibility clearly contemporary in this, the 2015 Oliver Award winner for Best New Play. The House of Windsor is at stake when, in the near future, King Charles takes the throne and faces challenges on multiple fronts, including from William and Kate, who are determined to right what they see as wrong. March 17-April 2 Cardinal Stage, Bloomington Details
One of the best things about the Oscar-winning film “Birdman” was its jazzy, percussive score. Antonio Sanchez, who composed the original material for the soundtrack—augmenting work by Ravel, Rachmaninoff and others—will be playing the score live during this screening of the film. March 18 Butler University Clowes Memorial Hall Details
One of the greatest silent films—strike that—one of the greatest films of all time, Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights” gets the live-orchestra treatment courtesy of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Not only did Chaplin write, star in and direct it, he also penned the music, which was later orchestrated by Timothy Brock. March 18 Butler University Schrott Center for the Arts Details
“The Grapes of Wrath”
It’s a shame one of the only touring theatrical dramas coming to Indianapolis is available only for a student matinee. National Players, based at the Olney Theatre Center in Maryland, has been hitting the road with shows since 1949. Here, the troupe presents Frank Galati’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s dust bowl epic. March 15 Butler University Clowes Memorial Hall Details
