Candidates, PACs buy $850K in TV ads for presidential race here

Republicans Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are joining Democrat Bernie Sanders airing television ads in Indianapolis—as have three political action committees.

The candidates and PACs so far have spent $856,705 to flood the Indianapolis media market with political ads in advance of the May 3 primary election, according to orders filed by the stations with the Federal Communications Commission. Some of the ads aren't scheduled to begin airing for several days.

Among candidates, Sanders is spending the most with $154,035 on ad buys so far, compared with Cruz’s $113,500 and Trump’s $112,970.

Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John Kasich have not purchased any ads here—at least not yet. 

Of the political action committees running ads here, Club for Growth—a pro-Cruz PAC—has spent the most so far: $249,550. Previously the group said it would spend $1 million on advertising in Indiana.

The Our Principles PAC, an anti-Trump PAC, has spent $153,450. And the Trusted Leadership PAC, which is pro-Cruz, so far has spent $73,200.

The primary election here is expected to be competitive. A new public poll out Friday from WTHR/Howey Politics Indiana shows potentially tight Republican and Democratic contests. Trump and Clinton hold slight leads in their respective races.
