Paddlefish caviar goes toxic

Commercial fishing outfits are taking tons of caviar
from paddlefish in the Ohio River because severe restrictions on fishing for Russian sturgeon in the Caspian Sea have
depleted the supply of the eggs.

But thereâ??s a problem: Indiana along with Kentucky and Tennessee have issued warnings that Ohio River and Mississippi River
caviar can be contaminated with mercury, chlordane and polychlorinated biphenyls, which cause cancer.

The fish, which can grow to 200 pounds, are scooping up the toxins along with the plankton they eat.

The problem is so obscure that when Whole Foods Markets was asked about it by the Associated Press, the company hadnâ??t heard
about the warnings.
