A former tea room and garden center in Fishers is getting new life in the form of an office building.

Indianapolis-based Shamrock Builders has filed plans to redevelop the former Rita’s Backyard site on the north side of 116th Street, just west of Brooks School Road. Rita’s Backyard Tea Room and Garden Center operated at 12244 E. 116th St. until May 2015, when the owner retired and sold the property.

Rita Beck, the property’s owner, sold the nearly 2-acre property to F.C. Tucker Co. in June 2015, property records show.

Now, the old buildings have been demolished, and the property is ready for redevelopment.

Shamrock proposes building a 15,000-square-foot, one story office building with space for up to six tenants. Documents don’t indicate whether Shamrock has any tenants in mind for the project.

The office building would have a residential style to blend in with the properties around it. The building immediately west of the site houses Simply Dental and Vital Chiropractor. In filing documents, Shamrock said the new office building would complement the dental and chiropractor building to the west.  North, south and east of the property are residential neighborhoods.

Shamrock has requested the site be rezoned from the C2-neighborhood business district to a planned unit development.

A public hearing on the project is slated for Feb. 6 before the Fishers Advisory Plan Commission. From there it would go to the Fishers City Council for final approval.
