Is IKEA coming to Indy?

IKEAThe rumor popped up again last week as I was preparing to cover the International Council of Shopping Centers annual
convention in Las Vegas. Was IKEA looking at Indianapolis? Were they interested in building a store at Anson or in Greenwood?
The world's largest furniture retailer, with 300 stores in 35 countries, generates excitement in markets it enters and
anticipation over where it may open next. The nearest locations are in suburbs of Cincinnati and Chicago. The stores typically
take about 30 acres along major interstates. The attention and excitement is flattering, said IKEA Spokesman Joseph Roth.
But IKEA has not visited Indiana to scout sites since before it opened its Cincinnati store a few years ago. The Swedish
company also has no immediate plans to look at potential store sites in central Indiana, Roth said. While there are no plans
for an IKEA, two other high-profile retail concepts are poised to open their first Indiana stores soon. Find out which ones
in this weekend's print IBJ, on newsstands Saturday.
