Does IU already have a short list?

Indiana University President Michael McRobbie announced Feb. 15 that the university will launch an immediate investigation into new NCAA allegations against men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson.

Athletics Director Rick Greenspan will oversee an assessment as to whether allegations of potentially “major” recruiting violations raised against Sampson are “credible and accurate,” McRobbie said.

Greenspan will have until Feb. 22 to complete the investigation and report back to McRobbie with a recommendation on what further action should be taken, McRobbie said during a short press conference.

Even though Sampson likely will be the team’s coach for the next two games, and maybe the entire season, speculation already has started to swirl about who should be IU’s next coach should the ax fall.

The names that have surfaced are Washington State coach Tony Bennett, son of former Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett; Baylor coach Scott Drew, son of Valparaiso coach Homer Drew; Ohio State’s Thad Matta and New Mexico’s Steve Alford.

WFNI-AM 1070 talk show host Eddie White even lobbied for Texas Tech’s Pat Knight. The son of The General, however, has already gone on record saying he isn’t interested.

What do you think? If Sampson goes, who should replace him?
