Bond market turmoil could raise costs for stadium, other projects

February 25, 2008

The debt strategy Gov. Mitch Daniels’ top financial officials developed to save the state money on major projects like
Lucas Oil Stadium has turned sour.

SEC pushes Lilly, WellPoint for more info on executive pay: Two Indianapolis companies are among 350 queried

February 25, 2008

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission wants to know more about how Eli Lilly and Co. and WellPoint Inc. decide how to pay their top executives. The two Indianapolis companies exchanged letters last fall with the SEC. The federal agency requested more information about executive compensation from 350 of the nation’s largest public companies. The correspondence led Lilly to include more detailed information in a preliminary version of its proxy statement that it filed Feb. 6. WellPoint officials have promised…

NOTIONS: Emerging from Eden, wanting to head straight back

February 25, 2008

Last week, my wife Cherí and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary with a trip to Turks and Caicos. We walked for miles along the white sand beaches of Grace Bay, snuggled in a hammock at sunset, slathered on sunblock and, between us, polished off 10 books at poolside. By midweek, we’d finally chilled from the tension of the daily grind. Unfortunately, about that time, the anticipatory anxiety of returning home set in. “I don’t wanna go back,” was our…

Streetcars work in Portland, but viability here uncertain

February 25, 2008

If the introduction of modern streetcars to one West Coast city can be replicated here, Indianapolis would see new, higher-density
housing and related retail and restaurants shadowing the line. Fallow areas crossed by the tracks would become fertile for
new investment. At least that was the case in Portland, Ore., a city mesmerizing to Indianapolis civic leaders, who last month
formed Downtown Indianapolis Streetcar Corp. They risk being run out of town on a rail: a streetcar line will cost…

IU players threaten boycott

February 22, 2008

CBS Sports this morning is reporting that Indiana University men’s basketball players are threatening to boycott the remainder of the season if coach Kelvin Sampson is forced out. Quoting unidentified sources, CBS Sports reported that players and IU Athletic Director…

Janitors union to start negotiations today

February 21, 2008

The Service Employees International Union, which has organized janitors in Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio, and now Indianapolis, begins negotiations today on behalf of 1,500 local janitors after years of contentious organizing efforts. Companies participating in the Indianapolis negotiations are ABM Industries Inc. of San Francisco; Group Services France of Paris; Mitch Murch’s Maintenance Management Co. of […]

At last, open-wheel unity!

February 20, 2008

UPDATE (Feb. 22): Owners of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League completed an agreement in principle today that will unify the sport for 2008, said a statement released at 4:40 p.m. by the Indy Racing League. Several Champ Car…

NFL Combine happy in Indy

February 20, 2008

With all that’s happening on the local sports scene, it’s easy to forget about the NFL Scouting Combine, which begins today in the RCA Dome. The Combine, which was first held in Indianapolis in 1987, is an event that has…

IUPUI and IU business degrees

February 14, 2008

The undergraduate business program at IUPUI used to let in just about anyone. At one point, only the bottom
10 percent of a high school graduating class was steered to Ivy Tech or elsewhere.

Got a business degree from IUPUI? It…

Big Ten tourney interest rising?

February 14, 2008

Thirty six hours ago, it looked like the Big Ten tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse March 13-16 would be an attendance blockbuster. Indianapolis has had difficulty matching the tournament’s crowds at Chicago’s United Center, but this figured to be the year…

Commentary: A story we all should heed

February 11, 2008

Last month, Brightpoint Inc. Chairman and CEO Bob Laikin was honored with Indiana University’s Distinguished Entrepreneurs-In-Residence Award. If the selection committee was looking for an executive with pluck, it chose well. The IU Kelley School of Business hosts the Distinguished Entrepreneurs-In-Residence program to inspire students and help them learn about the challenges of starting or expanding an emerging business. Laikin’s tumultuous and exciting journey left the students as dizzy as a day-long ride on the Kings Island Beast. Laikin founded…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Green building should be the norm, not the anomaly

February 11, 2008

I cringed when I heard the news: Indiana is second to last when it comes to being green. We’re supposed to be America’s heartland. But instead of being known for the life sciences, economic initiatives or even our corn fields, we’re getting recognized for our dirty air and water. Last year, Forbes conducted a study to find the greenest states in the country. Vermont, Oregon and Washington topped the list. At the bottom: Alabama, Indiana and West Virginia. While Indiana…

SPORTS: Once in Knight’s doghouse, I never came out

February 11, 2008

If memory serves, the year was 1982. I was in Bloomington covering a Bob Knight media gathering for the local daily when one of the employees of Indiana University’s sports information office tapped me on the shoulder and said I had an emergency call from my wife. I immediately picked up my notepad and tape recorder and called home. Our 2-yearold daughter was apparently seriously ill and my wife was in the process of taking her to the hospital emergency…

NOTIONS: A vote for new voices in the fine art of democracy

February 11, 2008

My sons Zach and Austin came of voting age in 2006. That November, there weren’t many contested or competitive races where they lived (near Fort Wayne). Zach registered and voted, anyway. Austin didn’t bother. Zach and I gave Austin a hard time about that. Last September, Zach headed off to college in California, while Austin and his girlfriend, Karolina, began their freshman year at New York University. A few weeks after arriving in Manhattan, there was a campaign rally in…

City getting new marathon

February 11, 2008

Organizers for a new Indianapolis marathon and half-marathon think the event will become a national draw, showcasing downtown
monuments and historic neighborhoods. The first Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, to be held Nov. 1, is the brainchild of
Carlton Ray, a former city engineer who worked in the Hudnut, Goldsmith and Peterson administrations.

Green group touts its mission in HQ project:

February 11, 2008

The Fountain Square property that Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Inc. has purchased to house its headquarters is undergoing a massive renovation that will transform it from abandoned derelict to an environmental showpiece. In the process, the not-for-profit environmental group is hoping to set a green example for other developments and draw attention to its mission. KIB bought the building at the corner of Fletcher and Shelby streets for $410,000 in October from the Southeast Development Neighborhood Corp. A $1.3 million redevelopment…

Officials plan streetcar comeback

February 5, 2008

Some top civic leaders have quietly created a not-for-profit organization to study and build a streetcar “circulator” system downtown. Downtown Indianapolis Streetcar Corp. would bring the electric vehicles to the streets for the first time since the 1950s. Notable members of the group include Bob Bedell, former president of the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association, […]

Major League Winners

February 5, 2008

Author and former IUPUI dean Mark Rosentraub is writing another book.

This one, titled “Major League Winners,” focuses on the five U.S. cities he thinks have most successfully used sports as an economic…

Manning vs. Manning

February 4, 2008

The day after the New York Giants’ improbable Super Bowl XLII triumph, sports marketers are already lining up to talk with the game’s MVP, Eli Manning. And there’s speculation that Manning’s sudden success will have a profound effect on older…

Developer with environmental bent has $20M pipeline of projects

February 4, 2008

Expensive suits and luxury cars are standard issue for most developers, but not for the owners of locally based Casa Verde
LLC. Three of four owners sport beards. They build only Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certified
projects. But don’t let the hippie image mask the company’s mission: Make green by building green.
