Nervous banks cut off some borrowers, tighten reins on others

October 6, 2008

Local companies that rely on credit have seen their borrowing power shrink and in some cases disappear as a deep freeze
in the nation’s credit markets drives fears of a broad economic slowdown. A handful of businesses, including
a Greenwood security firm and an Indianapolis contractor, already have shut down after credit dried up,
and others are on the ropes as troubled banks seek to limit their loan exposure.

Firm off to a FAST start: Investors backing company’s kidney assessment technology

October 6, 2008

FAST Diagnostics quickly is becoming one of the more promising companies in Indiana University’s efforts to commercialize its discoveries. Incorporated in November 2006, it is developing a method to measure kidney function faster and more accurately than existing techniques can. While FAST represents speed, the name actually stands for functional assessment and surveillance technology. The fledgling firm so far has attracted more than $4 million from investors, including $2 million from the state’s 21st Century Fund. BioCrossroads, Rose Hulman Ventures…

Commentary: Downtown reflected in shoeshine

October 6, 2008

Snake was proprietor of the shoeshine stand at Cento Shoes on South Meridian Street and, like he said, he could “make your shoes shine like new money every time.” For over 27 years, he applied his spit and polish with lively commentary on any subject you chose. He was a downtown historian and authority on the local scene. Snake suffered from a variety of ailments, but it was arthritis that finally sent him into retirement. While watching him fold that…

SPORTS: Pacers look to their roots to reconnect with fans

October 6, 2008

On Oct. 8, the Indiana Pacers are going to treat us older folks to a nostalgic trip. They’re going to take on the New Orleans Hornets in a preseason game at the Pepsi Coliseum. Before things like corporate naming rights came along, it was simply known as the Coliseum. It was that “other” basketball venue in town, playing second fiddle to Butler (now Hinkle) Fieldhouse. But when the Pacers entered the American Basketball Association and began dribbling those red, white…

Greenwood company hits it out of the park: Big League Tours tripled its revenue this year

October 6, 2008

While most Major League Baseball fans are focused on this year’s playoffs, local entrepreneur Glenn Dunlap is already thinking about next year. Dunlap formed Greenwood-based Big League Tours in 2006, offering group trips to big-league baseball games and other related attractions. One such trip took swings through games at Fenway Park in Boston, Yankee Stadium in New York, and the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Other trips hit fabled ballparks in Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee and San Francisco….

SPORTS: Some stop paying, start playing when money’s tight

September 29, 2008

Goodness knows, I’m not an economist. One look at my checking account would confirm that. So as my wife and I gather in front of the evening news and try to digest the ups and downs of the stock market along with our dinner, we, like most Americans, can only hope and trust (?) that our wiser (?) government and financial leaders will find a way out of the morass. We’re luckier than many. Our children are raised and college…

September 29, 2008

But since early 2007, Emmis’ stock has fallen 84 percent, shrinking the company’s stock market value from $307 million to $48 million. The troubles have cast uncertainty over one of Indianapolis’ highest-profile businesses.

cable television’s troika of video/voice/Internet service, has generated several consumer complaints to
state regulators since it was rolled out here in earnest last year. The complaints range from long installation
times to frozen television pictures that require rebooting the system or calling a technician.

September 22, 2008

Mike’s Express Carwash makes money the old-fashioned way. The second-generation family affair, now celebrating its 60th

the process. And its owners still sweat the small stuff.

SPORTS: Time to deflate that which inflated city’s image

September 22, 2008

Last week’s column looked ahead to the limitless possibilities of Lucas Oil Stadium. This week’s topic is a last look back at the Hoosier/RCA Dome because, this Wednesday, the Dome will be deflated and it will pass forever from our skyline. But not from our memories. Imagine our city without it. There would be no Indianapolis Colts. There likely would be no forthcoming Super Bowl, no Final Fours and no NCAA headquarters. There likely would have been no Pan American…
