Man critically shot on east side

August 2, 2012

A 33-year-old man was left in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds Thursday morning after a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis. Police found the victim after being dispatched to the Sportz Bar & Grill in the 4600 block of East 10th Street about 3:15 a.m. Investigators are talking with witnesses, but no arrests have been made.

Security guard dies in liquor store fire

August 2, 2012

A security guard died early Thursday morning following a fire at a liquor store on the north side of Indianapolis. Firefighters were called to the Community Spirits store at West 38th Street and North Capitol Avenue about 1:45 a.m. and found the guard inside the burning building. Police say the guard was about 15 minutes from ending his shift when he forced a female clerk to leave and began breaking liquor bottles and setting the contents on fire. The guard, who worked for Superior Security Co., was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later. The fire caused about $95,000 in property damage.

Colts owner won’t allow TV blackouts

Colts owner Jim Irsay may have to get his credit card out to keep his team on local television, but this year especially he can't afford to have the local masses not watching his team on Sundays.

Six charged in shooting of 22-year-old

August 2, 2012

Six people were charged Thursday in connection with a fight and shooting that ended in the death of a former Indianapolis-area hoops star. Larretha (Lala) Draughon, 22, was killed in the shootings July 3 at the baseball diamonds at Ben Davis Little League Park. Trey Bebley and Aurelious Woods were each charged with one count of murder, two counts of felony battery and one count of attempted murder. Tyrone Mills, Kayla Woods and Takia Rice were each charged with a count of murder and two counts of felony battery. Tammy Carter is charged with two counts of felony neglect of a dependent and false informing.

Emmis Communications Corp. told a U.S. judge it will delay a scheduled Aug. 14 shareholder vote that could wipe out $34 million in unpaid preferred stockholder dividends until after she rules on a bid to block the balloting.

Deadline arrives for Indiana fair disaster claims

Victims of the deadly stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair faced a Wednesday deadline to make claims against a $13.2 million settlement offer from the state and two private companies, but it could be weeks before they learn their share of the money and even whether the deal will go forward.

N.C. regulators hire law firm to probe Duke Energy

North Carolina utilities regulators said Wednesday they have hired a former federal prosecutor with experience digging into corporate affairs to reveal whether regulators were misled ahead of a takeover that created America's largest electric company.
