Local building permits down again in August

The number of building permits filed in the nine-county metropolitan area dropped by 18 percent in August from the same time a year ago, falling from 354 to 290. The drop marks the third consecutive month permits have fallen.

Indianapolis schools continue big enrollment drop

Indianapolis Public Schools lost more than 900 students from last school year, putting it within 800 students of falling behind Fort Wayne’s school district as the state’s largest.

Repeat bank-robbery suspect arrested

September 21, 2010

Indianapolis police say they have arrested a suspected serial bank robber with the help of the FBI. Agents believe 43-year-old Brinton Yates is responsible for robbing four banks in the last three weeks while he was on parole for a previous bank robbery conviction. He's accused of targeting banks on the north side. A Chase Bank on Michigan Road was hit twice. Police said Yates also held up a Chase Bank on Meridian Street and a Key Bank on Fall Creek Parkway.
 

Morning crash injures three

A two-car crash caused traffic problems on the city’s north side Tuesday morning. The crash happened before 8 a.m. near 75th Street and College Avenue. Police say three people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two other passengers were not hurt.
 

Gunmen hit north-side Walgreens

September 21, 2010

Indianapolis police are investigating the robbery and attempted robbery of two north-side Walgreens stores Tuesday morning. The first incident happened about 1:30 a.m. at the Walgreens at 86th Street and Ditch Road. The store manager told police two black men armed with guns entered the store, but became nervous and ran out 10 seconds later. Then, just after 4 a.m., the Walgreens at 86th Street and Michigan Road was robbed at gunpoint by a black male wearing a white ski mask. The suspect drove off in a blue-green car. Police say the two incidents are likely related. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

Proposed city parking deal would bring 200 jobs

A proposal to lease the city’s parking meters for 50 years would require the vendor to bring 200 jobs to Indianapolis for at least seven years. The salaries and benefits would range from $16,000 to $95,000 a year.

TechPoint unveiling ‘measured marketing’ campaign

The initiative will promote the advantages of doing business in Indiana to attract more “measured marketers.” They are companies such as ExactTarget and Aprimo Inc. that provide a platform for marketing via e-mail, social media and other technologies.

Indiana’s unemployment rate remains flat

The state’s jobless rate in August remained unchanged from the previous month’s figure of 10.2 percent. The loss of seasonal government and manufacturing jobs offset the addition of 3,000 private-sector jobs.

Amazon warehouse to surpass 1 million square feet

September 21, 2010

Amazon's warehouse in Boone County will exceed 1 million square feet by next year. Duke Realty began construction on the new leasehold in August, said Mark Hosfeld, vice president of leasing and development. The online retailer came to Duke's Anson development in 2008 with a lease of about 630,000 square feet at 4237 Anson Boulevard.

Hoosier Lottery moving to Meridian Street building

The lottery will move in January to the Buick, a 60,000-square-foot building at 13th and Meridian streets owned by principals of Shiel Sexton Construction.
