MARCUS: The highs and lows of unemployment

Indiana’s unemployment rate in July was 10.1 percent—the 12th-highest of the 50 states. Nevada was running at 14.3 percent to lead the nation, while the lowest rate was 3.6 percent, in North Dakota. We’re much closer to the worst than we are to the best.

Teens arrested after home vandalized

September 2, 2010

Four teens are in custody for causing more than $150,000 in damage to a massive home. Jennings County police are looking for two more teens who took part in the destruction of the $2 million home hidden away in the woods near North Vernon, about 60 miles south of Indianapolis. Police say the teens broke in twice. Authorities believe the teens are also responsible for a recent break-in at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon.
 

Residents rescued from downtown blaze

An early-morning fire damaged a downtown Indianapolis apartment building on Thursday. The fire broke out near 14th and Pennsylvania streets. Firefighters reportedly had to rescue some residents from second- and third-story windows of the St. Regis. Investigators are trying to find out what caused the blaze.
 

Home condemned after dead cats found

September 2, 2010

The Marion County Health Department has condemned a home in Lawrence that authorities found full of dead cats and feces. The home is in a mobile home community in the 5400 block of Wheel Estates West Drive. A neighbor said dozens of dead cats may have been found. The owner has been ordered not to own or possess any animals in Lawrence and may face additional charges. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.
 

Eateries cash in on TV appearance

Owners of Edwards Drive In and Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream say they’ve experienced a large uptick in business after being featured last month on the Travel Channel’s popular “Man v. Food” show. Now Indianapolis’ Flying Cupcake and West Coast Tacos are hoping for their time in the spotlight, too.

New jobless claims tick down slightly

Initial jobless claims fell by 6,000, to 472,000, in the week ended Aug. 28, in line with the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, Labor Department figures show.

State makes it easier to renew asbestos-removal license

Logistics firm plans 100-plus jobs in Greenwood

Caterpillar Logistics will lease at least half of a 668,000-square-foot warehouse that has been empty since it was built four years ago.

Indianapolis software firm RealMed acquired

September 2, 2010

Health care software firm RealMed Corp. will keep its base of operations in Indianapolis after being acquired by health information exchange provider Availity LLC of Jacksonville, Fla. Terms of the deal announced Wednesday were not disclosed.

Indiana voters going online to register to vote

The secretary of state's office says more than 4,000 Indiana residents have gone online to register to vote or update registration information since the state started offering the online service July 1.

Appeals court ruling upholds Lilly’s Evista patents

Eli Lilly and Co. won a court ruling Wednesday that blocks plans by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. to sell a generic version of the Evista osteoporosis treatment before March 2014.

Attorneys granted access to Behrman evidence

September 1, 2010

Defense attorneys trying to overturn the murder conviction of the Bloomington man convicted of killing an Indiana University student in 2000 will get access to a key piece of evidence in the case. John Myers II had asked that his own experts be able to examine the bicycle 19-year-old Jill Behrman was riding the day she disappeared in Bloomington in 2000. The bike was found about two miles away from Myers’ home. In 2006, Myers was convicted in the killing and sentenced to 65 years in prison.
 

Firefighter dismissed over harassment charges

The Lawrence Merit Board has voted to relieve veteran firefighter Michael Rude of his job following accusations he sexually harassed several women in the department. In a meeting that lasted until 1 a.m. Wednesday, the board heard testimony from several women and men. The witnesses described incidents of Rude’s walking into the women-only dorm of the fire station, making sexual comments toward female emergency medical technicians, and groping the wife of a captain at a holiday party.
 

Man robbed at gunpoint on east side

September 1, 2010

A manhunt is under way for three men who police say forced a man to withdraw cash from an ATM early Wednesday morning near East 46th Street and Arlington Avenue. The victim had just gotten off work when three young men asked him for a ride. Once they got in his truck, one of them pulled a gun out and told him to drive to a nearby ATM, according to police. The victim got $20 from the ATM, then dropped the suspects off near Sheridan Avenue and Meadowlark Drive. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.
