The United Auto Workers has set Wednesday as the deadline to reach an agreement with Chrysler on a new four-year contract, reports The New York Times, citing people with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The sides were reported to be in talks over the weekend. Discussion is expected to continue today. Chrysler employs about 6,400 […]

Atlanta-based Collegiate Ventures LLC plans to build a $60 million mixed-used project on 6.4 acres in West Lafayette. The project would include 80 to 100 hotel rooms, 115 condos, and retail and office space. Construction of Champion’s Centre could begin in the spring and take up to 16 months to complete. The project will be […]

GM workers in Fort Wayne barely ratify pact

October 8, 2007

Only 50.7 percent of union workers at General Motors Corp.’s Fort Wayne pickup truck assembly plant ratified the tentative United Auto Workers contract, according to The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne. Approximately 90 percent of eligible workers voted on the national contract. The plant has roughly 3,000 workers; 2,860 are hourly. The contract appears to […]

Johnson County councilman sells golf course

October 8, 2007

Ron West, a member of the Johnson County Council, has sold Royal Oak Golf Course in Greenwood to locally based Divine Investment Group for an undisclosed price, according to Leading Edge Commercial Real Estate Services, the brokerage firm representing both parties. The 350-member club, at 2080 S. State Road 135, was owned by R.H. West […]

By a vote of 107-1, workers at UPS Freight in Indianapolis have ratified their first contract with the trucking unit. The deal, which calls for higher wages, more benefits and improved working conditions, was reached Sept. 30. Local 135 represents 125 dockworkers and drivers. The Teamsters intend to use the agreement as a pattern to […]

PEOs bouncing back following shakeout: Professional employer organizations enjoying growth as companies seek better ways to manage benefits

October 8, 2007

Even though Sentelligence Inc. in Noblesville has only five employees, the tiny tech firm offers an appealing benefits package rivaling that of a large corporation. The designer of diagnostic sensing devices for diesel engines has not discovered the Holy Grail of human resources. Rather, it’s using what’s known as a professional employer organization. Companies contract with PEOs to handle all the headaches of human resources, including payroll, payroll taxes, Worker’s Compensation claims, health plans, and other employee benefits, not to…

IU, state pushing regulators to halt sale of I-Light vendor

October 8, 2007

Indiana University and the state’s Office of Technology have sought an emergency order from regulators to halt a Colorado
company’s further assimilation of an Indianapolis fiber provider it bought Oct. 1.

Marketing firm broadens offerings, narrows focus: Hetrick projects 20-percent growth on fewer clients

October 8, 2007

In the last year, Hetrick Communications has hired 10 employees, added a major new client, and changed its focus. What was once primarily a public relations firm is now also an advertising agency targeting health care and life sciences. On the heels of the changes, Hetrick actually wants fewer clients. “We want fewer, bigger clients,” said Amy Ahlersmeyer, the firm’s president and chief operating officer. “We want our growth to come absolutely in the health care and life sciences sector.”…

SPORTS: Offended by the Pacers? Watch their defense

October 8, 2007

On Media Day Oct. 1 in Conseco Fieldhouse, all was well in the Indiana Pacers’ world. New coaches. New hope. New optimism. New season. New attitude. Save poor Shawne Williams’alarm clock-and, just askin’, but when was the last time you overslept an appointment with a judge?-and the lingering legal issues still facing Jamal Tinsley and Marquis Daniels, the feeling of looking forward and a fresh start was palpable. For those of you who have not yet met, or heard speak,…

Commentary: First-time camper ready for more

October 8, 2007

In August, 118 women, including Cathy Langham, attended Mickey’s Camp for Women. Contributions to central Indiana charities from this camp and from the similar camp for men totaled more than $235,000. I cede my space this week to Cathy to provide a camper’s perspective on the experience. The short story is: I had a great time, and you should do it. (The previous sentence is for people like me who read the first and last sentences of an article, and…

Patent dispute threatens Suros Surgical Systems: Consultant claims key role in biopsy innovation

October 8, 2007

An intellectual property tussle dating back to the origins of Suros Surgical Systems Inc. is threatening to become more than a headache for the local medicaldevice maker. Founded in 2000, Suros was one of the fastest-growing high-tech startups in Indianapolis history. Its machine for minimally invasive breast biopsies now rings up more than $43 million in annual sales. Such success attracted deep-pocketed suitors, and Suros was acquired in July 2006 for a whopping $240 million by Bedford, Mass.-based Hologic Inc….

Mental health parity gets closer to reality: Bill requires equal coverage in health insurance

October 8, 2007

Local mental health advocates are applauding a U.S. Senate bill passed last month that would require equal health insurance coverage for mental and physical ailments when policies cover both. The bill, which passed unanimously, moves advocates one step closer in their long-fought quest for a concept known as mental health parity. Mental Health America, formerly known as the National Mental Health Association, praised the passage as an opportunity to end discrimination against people with mental health disorders. Steve McCaffrey, president…

Ralston Square project would honor city’s first planner

October 8, 2007

A local development team is working on a 10-story, mixed-use tribute to a man who helped design the original plan for Indianapolis,
Alexander Ralston. The $60 million project, dubbed Ralston Square, would feature a 150-room hotel, 55 condos, a 617-space
parking garage and 41,000 square feet of retail space.

Commentary: Region is missing benefits of planning

October 8, 2007

Good urban design can create value for communities, individuals, the economy and the environment. The potential benefits include better public health, greater social equity, enhanced land values, a more vibrant local economy, reduced vehicle emissions and a more sustainable use of non-renewable resources. Central Indiana lacks geographical barriers to growth. Land is abundant and reasonably priced. However, the region lacks a cross-jurisdictional plan to manage growth and maximize the benefits from it. Instead, fields grow corn one season and homes…

PROFILE CAROLYN CLAY: Attorney ‘escapes’ from the infamous Rock Challenging open-water Alcatraz race gives a whole new meaning to ‘swimming with the sharks’ Editor’s Note: The original version of this story appeared in the July 11 issue of the Indiana Law

October 8, 2007

PROFILE CAROLYN CLAY Attorney ‘escapes’ from the infamous Rock Challenging open-water Alcatraz race gives a whole new meaning to ‘swimming with the sharks’ Editor’s Note: The original version of this story appeared in the July 11 issue of the Indiana Lawyer, a statewide newspaper for lawyers published by IBJ Media. Women in Business editor Della Pacheco added to the original story. Carolyn Clay has been swimming for as long as she can remember. The 29-year-old attorney at Indianapolis law firm…

Players benched for new Pacers ads

October 8, 2007

The Indiana Pacers recently rolled out a marketing initiative that was in sharp contrast to last year’s campaign, which prominently
featured players and proclaimed, “It’s up to us.” This year’s new television, radio and print advertisements appear with not
a whisper from or mention of anyone actually wearing the blue and gold.

Jones taps friends nationwide for Daniels fund raising

October 8, 2007

Silicon Valley venture capitalist Jack Gill–and dozens like him–are being recruited from far beyond state lines to support Indiana’s incumbent governor. On Oct. 9, Gill will be in the crowd at technology entrepreneur Scott Jones’ Carmel mansion. Jones, who organized the event, aims to collect $1 million for Daniels in a single day.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Why the nation’s union movement is in decline

October 8, 2007

The recent United Auto Workers strike against General Motors Corp. provides a good backdrop for considering the collapse of the union movement, and its causes. Back in the early 1970s, about one in four workers belonged to a union. Unions and union interests were powerful. Then, as now, unions came in two flavors-trade and industrial. Trade unions serve a critical role in the functioning of markets. Employers of carpenters, welders, masons, plumbers and a host of others rely upon unions…

NOTIONS: Of saints, poets and the randomness of life

October 8, 2007

Last weekend, my wife Cherí and I visited my son, Austin, and his girlfriend, Karolina, in New York City, where they’re first-year students at New York University. Whenever I land at LaGuardia, catch a cab into the city, ride the subway, shop on Fifth Avenue, or meld with the masses at Times Square, the iPod in my brain advances through Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” to a song called “Another Hundred People.” Amid the horns, sirens and white noise, I hear: Another…

Activists flexing muscles at city’s marquee firms:

October 8, 2007

Suddenly, activist investors are swarming around struggling Indianapolis public companies-from The Steak n Shake Co. and Conseco Inc. to Emmis Communications Corp. Here’s an unsettling reality: Activists are all about making handsome returns on their investments-often achieved by selling businesses, taking them private or selling them piecemeal. It’s not farfetched to think that a year from now, none of the three high-profile firms still will be a local public company. To be sure, the executives who run the three firms…
