VIEWPOINT: Seeing Indianapolis with new eyes

May 21, 2007

I left Indianapolis for New York City. Flying home for holidays, I never thought I could live here again. A nice place to grow up, Indianapolis gave me those wholesome Midwestern manners, recalled whenever a New Yorker asked, “You’re not from here, are you? You’re just too nice.” Indianapolis also gave me a successful career start, circa 1982. My partners and I later sold an OfficePlus location to a group in Manhattan in 1997. They invited me to move and…

Few hearing talk on FM: Station’s ratings plunge after format change

May 21, 2007

Indianapolis radio listeners are turning a deaf ear to the market’s newest talk-radio offering. According to recently released Arbitron Inc. radio station ratings, the newly formatted WWFT-FM 93.9 is fighting for its life as central Indiana’s fourth news-talk frequency. The station that dropped its contemporary Christian format and old WISG call letters the day after Christmas registered a paltry 0.8 rating in the first quarter, according to New York-based Arbitron’s most recent tally. Meanwhile, its commercial newstalk competitors, WIBC-AM 1070…

INVESTING: Big caps are back and best place for big 2007 gains

May 21, 2007

As this rally labors on, one point I brought up a few times in January is becoming clear. I expected that the small-cap stocks, which put on a powerful era of outperformance from 1999 until 2006, would cede their leadership to the bigger companies in America. A seven-year cycle of better returns is typical of the smaller stocks, and that ended last May. For the rest of 2006, things were about equal, and now the evidence is staring us right…

Otterness sculptures on their way back: But officials are still deciding where they’ll end up

May 21, 2007

Three bronze sculptures by Tom Otterness soon will be brought out of storage and shipped to Indianapolis, thanks to a private effort to raise money to buy the public art pieces that captivated the city in 2005. The roly-poly statues-with a total weight of more than 4,200 pounds-will be hoisted by art moving specialists, packed in crates and sent on their way, likely within three weeks. But what happens to them once they get here is still up in the…

EVERYBODY’S DOING IT INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE: Speedway place to play hooky in May

May 21, 2007

EVERYBODY’S DOING IT INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE Speedway place to play hooky in May The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race is, as the tag line goes, the “greatest spectacle in racing.” But the month leading up to it is no slouch, either. Lighter crowds, lower admission, and a greater opportunity to get close to drivers and cars mean less is more at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the weeks leading up to the last Sunday in May. With a scant week left…

Gigerich firm makes spate of hires after staff exodus:

May 21, 2007

Carmel-based consulting firm Ginovus LLC-which lost five professionals on May 11 to a new economic development practice started by the Indianapolis law firm Bingham McHale-has bounced back by hiring three people. Richard Rowley, legislative director under former Gov. Joe Kernan, joined as special counsel. Rowley will continue practicing law at Sommer Barnard, the Indianapolis law firm that hosts Ginovus. Jill Beckman was hired as director of operations. Beckman’s background is in accounting, most recently at Butler Uni versity. Denise Settlemyre…

Contamination reconsidered: Developers show more acceptance toward environmental trouble spots When property is scarce, mitigation becomes viable

May 21, 2007

When property is scarce, mitigation becomes viable The plan to close Citizens Gas & Coke Utility’s coke manufacturing plant this year has already brought a few inquires about its reuse potential. But perhaps the biggest impact of the foundry fuel-maker’s demise will be stoking discussions over whether other environmentally scarred properties are ripe for redevelopment. Until recent years, many developers regarded any property with even a tinge of environmental contamination as if a parcel in Chernobyl. The coke plant “illustrates…

EYE ON THE PIE: Indiana: the land of convenience

May 21, 2007

What advantage does Indiana have over other places? Living here gives you more time for living. Put differently, Hoosiers drive fewer minutes each way each day to and from work compared to many people living in other parts of the nation. The May 7 issue of U.S. News and World Report lamented the stress placed on Americans by gridlock. It discussed the “war on traffic” and suffocating congestion. With hope, the authors pointed to new transit systems and trafficmanagement techniques…

SPORTS: The great race isn’t as broken as some think

May 21, 2007

Recently, I served as a moderator for a panel that included Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian; Conseco Fieldhouse Executive Director and Indiana Pacers Vice President Rick Fuson; NCAA President Myles Brand; Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Joie Chitwood; and former Indiana Sports Corp. Chairman Jack Swarbrick. Except for the moderator, it was an all-star lineup, convened to discuss the impact sports has had on Indianapolis. It was both informative and inspiring as it captured the essence of the sports initiative and…

Group training for national dash: Not-for-profit wants to take race beyond hometown

May 21, 2007

A 2-1/2-year-old Indianapolis not-forprofit that funds melanoma education and research through an annual race hopes to extend its footprint around the country. Outrun the Sun Inc. has had preliminary talks with a race management firm in Los Angeles, said co-founder and Executive Director Anita Day. Los Angeles is the headquarters of Neutrogena, which recently agreed to sponsor Outrun the Sun’s annual race. Momentum to take the organization national also picked up this year when it landed Shape magazine and Subaru…

TeePee could rise again: Local man hopes to revive restaurant that was city fixture from 1930s to ’70s

May 21, 2007

Dick Turner is looking for an entrepreneur who shares his taste for nostalgia and Big Chief cheeseburgers. For 20 years, he has dreamed of opening an updated version of the classic TeePee restaurants that served as hangouts for generations from the 1930s to 1970s. At its peak, the chain had three Indianapolis locations, each with dining rooms and curb service, on Madison Avenue and Fall Creek Boulevard and in Nora. Turner can show you the frayed legal documents that outline…

Indiana not alone in combating mortgage foreclosures

May 18, 2007

Twenty-one states, including Indiana, are pushing ahead with consumer-protection laws and bond sales to try to minimize the impact of the deepest housing downturn since the Great Depression, according to Bloomberg. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels signed a bill designed to offer consulting to homeowners who are in default or in danger of doing so. A […]

European demand drives Hurco results up

May 18, 2007

Hurco Cos. Inc. today reported profit of $4.7 million for its second fiscal quarter ended April 30 compared to $3.9 million a year earlier. Revenue increased 15 percent, to $42.5 million. The Indianapolis-based maker of interactive computer controls, software and machine tools attributed the upswing partly to rising demand, mostly in Europe.

Educational attainment could have cost Marion jobs

May 18, 2007

An $800 million factory now churning out engines for Chrysler, Hyundai and Mitsubishi might have landed in Marion instead of Dundee, Mich., had Marion been able muster more college-educated workers, according to The Chronicle-Tribune of Marion. A Marion economic development official pointed out that the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance plant, which employs 530, demands at […]

Indianapolis Museum of Art receives $10 million donation

Shopping mall developer Melvin Simon and wife, Bren Simon, have given the Indianapolis Museum of Art $10 million to endow the director and CEO position, the IMA announced today. The donation will be added to IMA’s endowment of $367 million, but interest proceeds will fund salary and professional development expenses for the museum’s head. Though […]
