Districts shift to digital reading

Local school districts are embracing technology and ditching traditional textbooks. Beech Grove City Schools is among the districts phasing in thousands of tablet computers. The system is ordering 3,000 Android tablets for every student. Meanwhile, Center Grove next week will receive a visit from the Digital Bookmobile, an 18-wheel tractor-trailer that teaches students how to download eBooks and audio books as well as use iPhones, iPads and tablets.
 

Possible rape investigated at high school

August 12, 2011

Indianapolis police detectives are investigating the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl by a 14-year-old boy at Arsenal Technical High School. Officers who swarmed the school at about 5 p.m. Thursday handcuffed a male student and placed him in a squad car. Police said the boy has not been arrested and no charges have been filed. The teens were released to their parents.

 

Two women die in triple shooting

August 12, 2011

A triple shooting on the southeast side of Indianapolis early Friday morning resulted in the deaths of two women. Mary Swift, 37, died on the scene and 33-year-old Kelly Jinks died at Wishard Hospital. The third victim, Ronald Kortz II, 40, is in critical but stable condition at Wishard. The shootings occurred in an alley in the 1700 block of South State Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. Edward Lay, 37, was preliminarily charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Witnesses say the shootings stemmed from an argument over the volume of a stereo.

 

Local bar ordered to pay $45,000 to fired worker

The Wild Beaver Saloon in Broad Ripple agreed to the payment as part of a settlement reached Thursday. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the bar for allegedly firing the female employee because of her pregnancy.

Gleaners to benefit from Taste of the NFL

Gleaners Food Bank will be the primary recipient of a major Super Bowl fund-raiser, Taste of the NFL. The event will be Feb. 4 at Gleaners’ headquarters and warehouse, 3737 Waldemere Ave. Last year in Dallas the event raised $1 million for hunger-relief charities in NFL cities, said Linda Bendt, spokeswoman for the Minneapolis-based organization.
