Geico service center to create up to 1,200 jobs in Carmel

The insurer will invest millions to lease, renovate and equip a 109,000-square-foot customer service center at 101 W. 103rd St. It plans to begin hiring immediately, and bring up to 1,200 new jobs by 2016.

Four state teams make NCAA tourney

Four teams from Indiana received bids to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Indiana University earned the top seed in the East Region and will play Friday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio, against the winner of a play-in game between LIU Brooklyn and James Madison University. No. 6 seed Butler University will play Bucknell University on Thursday in Lexington, Ky., at 12:40 p.m. The University of Notre Dame, seeded seventh, faces Iowa State University in Dayton on Friday. And No. 14 Valparaiso University will play Michigan State University in Auburn Hills, Mich., on Thursday.
 

Infant’s body found in local creek

Indianapolis police are investigating the discovery of an infant’s body in a creek on the city’s east side. Police say they received a call Sunday morning from a man who told them he’d found the body behind his home in the 1500 block of Fenwick Avenue. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday to determine more information about the body and the cause of death.

Carmel police shoot armed man

March 18, 2013

Carmel police shot a 25-year-old man early Monday morning after he allegedly made threats to his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend. Aaron David, 25, was shot about 3:15 a.m. in a neighborhood near 96th Street and Ditch Road. He was taken to the hospital for surgery and is expected to live, officials said. Police said they opened fire on David after he ignored their commands and displayed a handgun.
 

Indiana’s unemployment rate jumps to 8.6 percent

Indiana’s unemployment rate rose to 8.6 percent in January, from 8.3 percent in December, even though the state added 8,200 private-sector jobs during the month. The monthly rate hasn’t jumped that much since 2009.

The average rate for 30-year mortgages rose to 3.85 percent from 3.73 percent for the week ended March 13, according to Bankrate.com. The rate for 15-year mortgages rose to 3.03 percent from 2.96 percent.

-LA Fitness leased 35,000 square feet at Stony Creek Commons, State Road 37 and Town & Country Boulevard, Noblesville. The tenant was represented by Scott Gray of Sitehawk Retail Real Estate and John Kalamaras of Real Source Partners. The landlord, Noblesville Partners LLC, was represented by Jeff Wright of Kite Realty Group.

-Reading Pretzel Machinery Corp. leased 25,340 square feet of industrial space at 7517-25 Winton Drive. The tenant was represented by Glenn Davis of Colliers International. The landlord, PCO Park 100-134 LP, was represented by Jake Sturman of Jones Lang LaSalle.

-Orbis Education Services LLC leased 19,455 square feet of office space at One Penn Mark, 11595 N. Meridian St., Carmel. Madison County considers new reservoir on White River

Economic development officials are proposing a $300 million reservoir on the White River about 50 miles northeast of Indianapolis that would be a catalyst for new investments and jobs and would include marinas, boat docks and restaurants.

Trucks hits, kills man on I-70

States troopers investigating a reported deer strike along Interstate 70 instead discovered the body of a pedestrian. Johnny Cole, 33, died after being struck by a semi at about 1:30 a.m. Friday on the city’s far-east side. Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident. They believe Cole was standing in the center lane when he was struck.
