Police: Nephew sold missing woman’s jewelry
Investigators confirmed Monday that they found 74-year-old Dorothy Heard’s wedding ring at a Marion pawn shop where it was sold June 13, the day the Noblesville woman went missing. Police identified her nephew, Donald Burns, from a store videotape taken when he pawned the jewelry; he also showed identification during the transaction. Burns, 47, was arrested June 14 when he tried to evade officers who wanted to question him. But authorities have not identified him as a suspect.
New texting law will be hard to enforce
A new state law making it illegal for Indiana motorists to send or read text messages is expected to create enforcement challenges for the state’s police officers. The law taking effect Friday restricts officers from confiscating cell phones to prove whether the driver was actually texting. The law makes texting while driving a Class C infraction with a fine up to $500, but motorists are allowed to use hands-free or voice-operated technology.
West-side apartment fire injures seven
An apartment fire on Indianapolis’ west side injured seven people Monday night. Residents reported the blaze at Port-O-Call Apartments, near Rockville Road and Interstate 465, about 10 p.m. Police arrived to find a large fire in a ground-floor bedroom. Fire officials said they extinguished the fire quickly because they are familiar with the complex. The blaze heavily damaged one apartment and caused smoke damage to a second. One person was taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the pace of mortgage loan activity fell 5.9 percent for the week ended June 17, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. The rate for 30-year mortgages increased to 4.57 percent from 4.51 percent the previous week. The rate for 15-year mortgages increased to 3.70 percent from 3.67 percent.
