Campaign flier sparks controversy in Carmel

A campaign flier for a candidate challenging four-term incumbent Carmel Mayor James Brainard in Tuesday’s primary election is getting a strong reaction. Political mailers from mayoral candidate John Accetturo feature a photo of Brainard next to four reviled political figures: Moammar Gadhafi, Saddam Hussein, Hugo Chavez and Rod Blagojevich. The caption reads, “It’s time for him to go, too.” Accetturo stood by the piece even though it puts Brainard in the same company as murderous dictators. “He’s been in office way too long just like the others on that mailer,” Accetturo said. Brainard’s campaign consultant, Allen Sutherland, said, “The piece speaks for itself and we have no further comment.”
 

Man shot to death on northeast side

Indianapolis police are investigating a weekend shooting that killed a 21-year-old man. Police responded to a report of a person shot at the Phoenix Apartments near East 42nd Street and Shadeland Avenue about 3 a.m. Saturday. They found Michael Lacy in the grass with multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives say Lacy was visiting a friend when he was approached by a group of people and they started fighting.

 

Wife stabbed to death in domestic dispute

May 2, 2011

A Fountain Square-area woman is dead, her husband under arrest and their daughter injured following a domestic dispute Sunday afternoon. Bobbie Jo Schaefer, 41, was stabbed to death inside a home in the 1200 block of Evison Street. Kenneth Schaefer, 56, was listed in serious condition with self-inflicted stab wounds. One of the couple’s daughters, a 15-year-old, received superficial stab wounds reportedly suffered while trying to fight off the attack on her mother. Family members said the couple had been married 23 years.
 

St. Vincent settles class-action debt-collection case

The hospital paid $31,500 to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by a patient who claimed St. Vincent used a debt collector that was not licensed in Indiana.
