St. Vincent Health appointed Karen Porter as chief planning officer, overseeing construction and operations efficiency for the 19-hospital system.

Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. named Jerry Kertesz vice president of sales, overseeing new business sales, as well as broker and consultant relationships. Kertesz has been vice president of account management in the company's national accounts division for more than four years.

WellPoint named Perry Pogany to replace Kertesz. He has served as vice president for auto and interplan national accounts for 12 years.

West Lafayette-based Kylin Therapeutics Inc. received a nearly $250,000 grant from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service that will advance the company's nanoparticle cancer-treatment research. Kylin's technology uses RNA and a natural process called RNA interference to directly target and "turn off" disease-causing genes. Kylin’s technology was discovered at Purdue University by former Purdue professor Peixuan Guo.

Lilly Ventures, the venture-capital arm of Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co., led a $24 million investment round in Massachusetts-based Cerulean Pharmaceuticals, which is developing nanoparticle drugs. According to Xeconomy.com, the Series C funding round will help Cerulean pay for Phase 2 clinical trials of its leading nanoparticle drug, which is designed to treat lung cancer. Steve Hall, a venture partner at Lilly, has joined Cerulean’s board of directors in connection with the funding round. Cerulean has now raised $56 million in venture capital.

Johnson Memorial Hospital asked county officials to approve a $14 million expansion of its surgical center to accommodate larger surgery suites, as well as new recovery beds and physician offices, according to the Daily Journal of Franklin. That expansion would add 29,000 square feet and renovate 9,300 square feet of existing space. Johnson Memorial wants to start construction in the spring and complete the project by late summer of 2012.

SUV stolen at gunpoint

Police are searching for a man who stole a sport-utility vehicle at gunpoint early Tuesday morning at an apartment complex on Brandonway Court on the northeast side. A woman and her husband had just arrived at their apartment parking lot when a man put a gun to the husband's head and demanded they hand over the keys. The suspect was last seen driving a 1996 dark-blue Chevy Tahoe westbound on east 56th Street.

South-side gas station robbed

A south-side Indianapolis gas station was robbed at knifepoint about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect was last seen leaving the Marathon station on South Meridian Street near Raymond Street heading north on Meridian in a beat-up Chevy or GMC pickup.

Ex-boyfriend arrested in arson deaths

Lawrence police have charged Joshwa Carlisle, 22, with two counts of murder and one count of arson in the deaths of his ex-girlfriend, Tracie Shannon, 25, and their 9-month-old daughter, Juliana. Shannon and her daughter were found dead Sept. 19 after a fire at Hunt Club Apartments in the 5000 block of Old Colony Road. A Marion County coroner ruled that Shannon died of smothering and the infant died of smoke inhalation. Investigators determined that fires were intentionally set around both victims.
