Indiana’s water-regulation proposals may get public hearing

June 14, 2007

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering whether to approve changes Indiana plans to make to its drinking-water regulations. Some of the changes are required under amendments to the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. States such as Indiana that administer their own programs must adopt rules at least as stringent as EPA regulations. Indiana’s changes […]

The Indianapolis International Airport Authority Board this morning gave the public the chance to weigh in on its proposed smoking ban. If the ban is approved, the public smoking room would be closed July 31 and smoking would be prohibited anywhere on the property by Jan. 1.

FUNNY BUSINESS: Biz buzz like “at the end of the day” puts me at the end of my rope

June 18, 2007

As part of my ongoing search for things to make fun of, I’ve spent the last few years collecting Business Buzzwords-Biz Buzz, if you will. I now know why they’re called buzzwords: Because if you read or hear more than two or three in a single sen tence, you feel a buzzing sensation in the back of your skull. Followed shortly thereafter by a full-blown migraine. That is precisely what happened to me after receiving an e-mail in which two…

Indianapolis-based Ratio Architects today unveiled final plans for a 420,000-square-foot expansion of the Indiana Convention Center. Among the details: 254,000 square feet of additional exhibit space, 63,000 square feet of meeting rooms, a new banquet kitchen and 100,000 square feet of so-called “pre-function space”-including three-story entry pavilion planned for the intersection of Capitol Avenue and […]

BP expansion could help stabilize Midwest fuel prices

June 28, 2007

The 1.7 million additional gallons of fuel per day anticipated from the proposed expansion of BP’s refinery in Whiting could bring needed stability to Midwest gas prices, energy insiders said this week. The $3 billion project will allow the northwest Indiana location to process heavy Canadian crude oil, according to the Post-Tribune of Merrillville. Industry […]

Conseco litigation to cost $35 million more

June 29, 2007

Conseco Inc. expects to cough up another $35 million to settle a massive consumer lawsuit about changes to its life insurance policies. That brings the Carmel-based insurer’s total pre-tax expense on the case to $250 million-and there’s always a chance the bill could run higher, the company warned today. The settlement is subject to court […]

Charities face more empty leadership chairs

July 9, 2007

Only 29 percent of executives have discussed a transition plan with their boards, according to a study by San Francisco-based
CompassPoint Nonprofit Services. Converging with this lack of preparedness is an approaching deficit of leaders.

NOTIONS: Oh, the things we worry about in modern America

July 9, 2007

My wife, Cheri, and I live in one of those newfangled, don’tstray-from-the-mainstream neighborhoods. It’s governed by wellmeaning “covenants and restrictions.” It has “architectural control guidelines.” These documents were formulated by a “development control committee” to “enhance the value and appearance of the community.” (We’re especially concerned with the “value” part, until our property-tax bills arrive, at which point we protest the assessed value.) Included among the controls in our neighborhood is a color palette. I imagine some designer back in…

Star to continue stand-alone business section

July 13, 2007

Last month, word got out that The Indianapolis Star had decided to fold the newspaper’s business section into the Metro&State section. Industry experts called the move a cost-saving measure, while Star officials said it was a matter of looking for better ways to get news to its readers. Upon further review this month, Star officials […]

EYE ON THE PIE: Health care and the pursuit of happiness

July 16, 2007

Some people believe the Fourth of July grants them liberty to disturb the night with their firecrackers. My pursuit of happiness is in conflict with theirs and I want them jailed. We all gladly infringe on the liberties of others while in pursuit of our own happiness. For example, should motorcyclists wear helmets? Yes, if all of us expect to pay their hospital bills (through higher premiums) and maintain them on disability after they have head injuries that might be…

Industry takes deep breath over ozone: Tougher EPA standards could force costly emission controls, choke economic growth

July 16, 2007

Just when the nine-county metro area appeared back in the good graces of the federal government where ozone levels are concerned, the feds want to tighten the standard once more. Manufacturers and other businesses that pump pollutants into the air that combine with sunlight to produce ozone are “apprehensive” about the proposed new rules, said Patrick Bennett, vice president of environmental, energy and infrastructure at the Indiana Manufacturers Association. Businesses in non-attainment counties face possible restrictions on expansion of facilities…

Dealers say mileage mandates are too much, too soon: But consumer group contends heightened demand for fuel-efficient vehicles should allay industry’s fears

July 30, 2007

The region’s largest consumer advocacy group is trying to counter efforts by Indiana car dealers who want to water down higher fuel economy standards passed by the U.S. Senate. Citizens Action Coalition has been rallying its base to pressure the Indiana delegation to stand behind aggressive fuel economy targets that would require a carmaker’s fleet to average 35 miles per gallon by 2018. With gas supplies pinched and prices relatively high,”this is a very current and important issue,” said Dave…

July 30, 2007

Bob Brody, CEO of St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers, is spearheading an emerging group of central Indiana health reformers
who want to start a bottom-up process to develop alternative solutions to the state’s–and possibly the nation’s–health care
crisis.

Settlement would halve water rate increase

August 1, 2007

Indiana American Water Co.’s proposed 18-percent rate hike would be cut nearly in half under a settlement agreement with the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor filed yesterday. The proposal would allow the Greenwood-based firm a 9.9-percent increase in rates and charges. Indiana American Water also agreed to develop a long-range water conservation plan, to […]

UPDATE: Watchdog cheers Vectren decision

August 2, 2007

Saying its need for electricity can be filled in other ways, Evansville-based Vectren Corp. announced yesterday that it will not go forward with a southwestern Indiana coal gasification project it planned with Duke Energy Corp. Vectren instead will turn to buying power and will rely more on natural gas-fired peaking plants, renewable resources and persuading […]
