When Kathy Fitzgerald has a group of 85 day-camp kids to entertain, she needs someone who can hold their attention-easier said than done considering they range in age from 6 to 13, not counting the 12 young adults who work as camp counselors. If an act bombs, the result can be chaos. That’s why Fitzgerald, assistant park manager for Broad Ripple Park, has locally based FamilyTime Entertainment Inc. on her speed dial. FamilyTime can deliver a fully produced magic show,…

A local not-for-profit has received a $1 million grant to help keep college kids safe from fires, some of which are set as pranks. The People’s Burn Foundation will begin pilot testing a DVD video on fire prevention and mail a final version to nearly 5,000 colleges and 38,000 fire departments, starting in April. The video was funded largely by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It’s the latest in a string of grants received…
Neither side is talking, but one thing is certain: The removal of the 13-year WTHR veteran known for a sometimes-testy temperament
comes at a crucial time for the local television station.
Election Day was no high point in the annals of Indianapolis media. How could we have missed such a big
story, that Greg Ballard was about to upset incumbent Mayor Bart Peterson?
Local news organizations treated Ballard as an afterthought until…
Long-time WTHR-TV Channel 13 General Manager Rich Pegram has left the station. Yesterday was his last day, WTHR spokesman Jeff Dutton confirmed. Reasons for his departure were unclear. WTHR officials would not elaborate, and Pegram could not be reached for comment. “It was a mutual decision between Rich and the company,” Dutton said. Other sources […]

WRTV-TV Channel 6 will launch a 7 p.m. newscast Sept. 10 to coincide with the first day of the station’s new anchors, Todd Wallace and Trisha Shepherd. WRTV will be the only local station with a 7 p.m. newscast. WRTV will continue to air newscasts at 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The 7 […]
With the pending arrival of two new lead anchors, WRTV-TV Channel 6 is preparing to embark on a big marketing campaign that station management hopes will lift it out of third place in the local ratings. The campaign, which is set to begin next month to promote changes within WRTV’s news division, will be marked by a flurry of billboard, radio, newspaper and, of course, television advertising, said WRTV General Manager Don Lundy. But the centerpiece of the campaign takes…
Production companies here say advertisements they’ve produced using high-definition technology are being held hostage by local television affiliates that have no way of showing them. The TV stations counter that they’re working as fast as they can to get up to speed.
For the first time, two Indianapolis television stations nabbed coveted Peabody Awards-among the highest honor given for TV productions worldwide-in the same year. WTHR-TV Channel 13 and WISH-TV Channel 8 were notified of their awards this month and will accept them June 4 at a ceremony in New York City. The Peabody certainly polishes the image of both stations, but it’s less clear how it will affect the bottom line of WISH or WTHR. The Peabody has been presented by…
When IBJ newsgathering partner WISH-TV Channel 8 and cross-town rival WTHR-TV Channel 13 each won a Peabody award last week, it was a rare event for any television market, let alone Indianapolis, the 25th-largest television market. Only New York, Boston and Chicago also have seen two local stations win the prestigious award in the same […]
WISH-TV Channel 8, IBJ ’s newsgathering partner, has won a Peabody award for an investigative series showing how a $30 helmet pad could save soldiers’ lives in a blast. WTHR-TV Channel 13 received a Peabody for exposing problems with the state’s tornado warning system, and a second for showing how area pharmacies discarded patient subscription […]
Veteran television journalist Kevin Finch has been promoted to news director from assistant news director of WISH-TV Channel 8, IBJ ’s newsgathering partner. In his new position, Finch will oversee news operations. Earlier, he planned and produced long-term news coverage at WTHR-TV Channel 13.
Heading into Super Bowl XLI, WISHTV Channel 8 is in the catbird’s seat among local broadcasters. With WISH’s affiliate network, CBS, carrying the Feb. 4 game, the local station is set to rake in a seven-figure sum in advertising revenue-in addition to what it would have made on the Super Bowl if the Colts weren’t in it, industry experts said. “With the Colts in the Super Bowl for the first time since moving to Indianapolis, WISH’s opportunities are immense,” said…
More than $10 million poured into Indianapolis broadcasters’ coffers this year, experts said, as politicians took to the airwaves in hopes of swaying voters. A fierce battle over control of Congress and a hotly contested Marion County prosecutor’s race contributed to the impressive total, which outpaced 2002 election sales by nearly $3 million. “It was a surprising year,” said Don Lundy, general manager of WRTV-TV Channel 6, which sold more than $1.3 million in political ads. Despite attempts to forecast…
Local office equipment distributor VanAusdall & Farrar Inc. is putting an entire city block on North Meridian Street up for auction, a move that could spur development in a corridor real estate experts say is ripe for activity. The three-acre property is between 12th and 13th streets.
