UPDATE: Interactive shares plunge on forecast

July 7, 2008

Stock in Interactive Intelligence Inc. plummeted 35 percent this morning after the Indianapolis software developer warned second quarter results would be hurt by fewer orders from existing customers. The shares fell $3.66, to $6.80, in early trading. Interactive stock hit a recent peak of $28.52 per share in November, but has trended lower since then. […]

Tech jobs rise, but graduates are on decline: Universities working hard to attract students into IT, computer sciences

July 14, 2008

At a time when central Indiana is adding high-tech jobs faster than any other area in the Midwest, the overall health of the industry could be threatened by a lack of interest from college students. The Washington, D.C.-based Computing Research Association’s annual survey of universities with doctorate-granting programs found an 18-percent drop this year in students completing bachelor’s degrees in professional information technology fields. The latest statistics are particularly alarming given they continue a trend seen for several years. Enrollment…

Pitch-Perfect Price: Digonex Technologies’ software helps retailers profit from demand

July 28, 2008

Is every song downloaded from iTunes really worth 99 cents? Indianapolis-based Digonex Technologies doesn’t think so, and it has developed a computer program using some complicated algorithms to prove it. The company’s software compiles sales data and re-prices items for online sales, allowing merchants to maximize profits by adjusting prices up or down based on demand. Consumers don’t notice a difference. “What we’re doing is a big idea,” said Digonex CEO Jan Eglen, 65. “Most of the [pricing systems] you…

SURF THIS: Finding a stray $500-a hint of what Mint can do

August 4, 2008

I received an email the other day offering some suggestions to save about $500 a year through a variety of basically painless financial moves. Most consisted of suggestions like “move this account, which is making next to nothing, to this bank where they’ll pay you 4 percent.” The email also recommended that I build an emergency fund, provided a list of all my account balances (everything from banking to credit cards to investments), pointed out the top purchases of the…

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: What you might not know about messengers

August 4, 2008

I’d like to put in a kind word for one of the most underused tools in business. It lets you stay in contact with lots of others online, send and receive files, make phone calls, keep in touch with things at home, and even hold Web videoconferences, after a fashion. It’s known generically as “instant messaging,” but you may know it under any number of trade names: MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AIM and many others. I use both MSN…

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY Laptop hell: Air travel can bounce, bungle data Travel may broaden the mind, but it’s hell on laptops. If your laptop suffers some kind of death-dealing blow, it’ll probably be on the road. Air travel is the worst. You’re required during security screening to pull your laptop out of its snug little protective cover and submit it to the tender mercies of the Transportation Security Administration’s conveyors, X-ray machines and employees. Then there’s the jostling scramble to…

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: Laptop hell: Air travel can bounce, bungle data

September 1, 2008

Travel may broaden the mind, but it’s hell on laptops. Then there’s the jostling scramble to put it back in on the far side of the screening…

Airport hoping to double ad revenue with digital push

September 15, 2008

Indianapolis International Airport officials hope to double advertising revenue, pushing it past $1 million, when the midfield
terminal opens in November. That income, officials said, is important because it helps ease pressure on cash-strapped
airlines, allowing them to focus on offering more flights. The airport relies on non-airline revenue, such as food sales and
advertising, for about 60 percent of its revenue.

IT firm rakes in VC cash: Interactions Corp. has raised $35M since 2002 inception

September 15, 2008

A fast-growing Carmel startup is using a blend of innovative software and human guides to answer questions over the phone.
The company could have located on either coast, but instead chose Carmel’s Clay Terrace. And the company, Interactions Corp.,
has raised more than twice as much money as ChaCha Search Inc., a higher-profile startup in a similar business that’s also
housed in Clay Terrace.

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: Browser wars: Should you go for Chrome?

September 15, 2008

There’s a war being waged all around you, and I’ll bet you haven’t even noticed. Oh, you may have noticed a year or two back, when the media reported on it, but after a while even wars get dull and the press wanders off to report on Jamie Lynn Spears’ baby. There used to be two combatants in the war. One was a behemoth, one of the world’s largest, while the other was an upstart, but gaining ground over time….

Firm off to a FAST start: Investors backing company’s kidney assessment technology

October 6, 2008

FAST Diagnostics quickly is becoming one of the more promising companies in Indiana University’s efforts to commercialize its discoveries. Incorporated in November 2006, it is developing a method to measure kidney function faster and more accurately than existing techniques can. While FAST represents speed, the name actually stands for functional assessment and surveillance technology. The fledgling firm so far has attracted more than $4 million from investors, including $2 million from the state’s 21st Century Fund. BioCrossroads, Rose Hulman Ventures…

because of habitually late payments.

Radio biz spurning local talent-WEB ONLY

January 24, 2009

Radio stations are moving away from live, local talent to cut costs, a move critics say could be a fatal blow in an era when traditional radio is fighting to hold onto an audience seduced by such things as the iPod, Internet and satellite radio. Stations squeezed by double-digit revenue decreases and a gloomy 2009 […]

In early April, the 110,000-square-foot Indianapolis distribution center of California-based medical-device supplier DJO Inc. will quietly roll out a revolutionary automated package-handling system. Grab a partner and dance. Fast.
