Miles to lead Super Bowl bid

January 23, 2008

Central Indiana Corporate Partnership CEO Mark Miles will lead the city’s attempt to land the Super Bowl in 2012, according to a source familiar with the matter. The announcement of Miles’ selection is expected this week. The source, who asked not to be named, said Miles will oversee initial research as well as assembling the […]

City to announce Super Bowl point person

January 22, 2008

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard this week plans to name a point person to head the city’s bid for the 2012 Super Bowl. Ballard spokeman Marcus Barlow said today the mayor’s office has moved forward and that other leaders are falling into place. John Lechleiter, who will become CEO of Eli Lilly and Co. in April, […]

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Lobbyists lob lots of bad ideas into tax debate

January 21, 2008

I am a huge fan of the Discovery Channel TV show “Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe.” I don’t get to watch if often. “SpongeBob SquarePants” dominates the Hicks household. But when I do, I revel in the host’s exploits in some of the nastiest jobs imaginable. But I think there’s one job I am more afraid of than anything I’ve seen on his show. There’s no amount of money that could make me a state legislator during a fiscal crisis….

NOTIONS: Will the change bandwagon ever roll our way?

January 14, 2008

On the presidential campaign trail these past few weeks, the dominant exit-polling insight seems to be that Americans are hungry for change. Voters have told interviewers they’re weary of the direction we’re headed, tired of the politics of the past and eager to forego the status quo. And so the presidential candidates, Republican and Democrat alike, have jumped on the change bandwagon, ridden it from Iowa to New Hampshire, and tried to explain why they’ve been, are, or could be…

Conrad manager says four-diamond award perfect fit for market

January 14, 2008

Almost two years after opening, the Conrad Indianapolis hasn’t received a Mobil Travel Guide review, and its four-diamond
AAA ranking puts it on par with five other Indianapolis hotels–most of which target conventioneers and business travelers.

Not-for-profits lack solid IT foundation, study says: NPower Indiana says most groups fail to meet basics

January 14, 2008

A new study suggests a large percentage of the region’s not-for-profits still struggle with inadequate technology that undermines productivity, invites security breaches and hinders their community outreach potential. NPower Indiana, a not-for-profit that provides low-cost technology consulting and services in central Indiana, studied 34 local not-for-profits under a grant from Verizon Foundation and Anthem Foundation. It found that 85 percent are “constrained by outdated PCs or operating systems, which can seriously affect their system’s stability, efficiency and ability to run…

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Property-tax abolition isn’t off table after all

January 14, 2008

Lawmakers had their individual and collective eyes opened last summer by scores of organized and impromptu property tax rallies across Indiana. While many who carried a sign, marched in the streets, or wrote a letter to the editor about the situation simply thought their individual taxes were too high, a good number of them (and several of the organizers of such events) had a special goal: the elimination of property taxes. Even after the municipal elections woke up the few…

Property-tax plan shifts tab for poor relief from counties to state

January 14, 2008

Here’s a political hot potato that so far has received little discussion in the rancorous debate over property-tax reform:
Should the enormous costs of helping impoverished Hoosiers continue to be funded county by county, or spread to taxpayers
statewide?

Burn foundation targeting campus fire deaths: Federal grant will help carry DVD’s message to thousands of colleges

January 7, 2008

A local not-for-profit has received a $1 million grant to help keep college kids safe from fires, some of which are set as pranks. The People’s Burn Foundation will begin pilot testing a DVD video on fire prevention and mail a final version to nearly 5,000 colleges and 38,000 fire departments, starting in April. The video was funded largely by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It’s the latest in a string of grants received…

Schools bring business into the classroom: Students learn from CEOs, race-car drivers, others

January 7, 2008

When Marian College asked racecar driver Michael Crawford to help launch the school’s entrepreneur-in-residence program and mentor students about realworld business, he wasn’t sure if it was such a great idea. “My hesitation was I didn’t want to pursue it right away,” Crawford said. “What happens if I go out of business? That would be embarrassing.” But he decided to do it because he believes his experience as an entrepreneur is more realistic than anything the students will read about…

Indy arts: The Ballard years

January 2, 2008

“…  Frankly, if it comes down to another piece of art or another cop on the street, that’s not a close call.”
So said Greg Ballard in a post-election interview with IBJ.

With Ballard now officially on the job as mayor of…

VIEWPOINT: Why did we allow gambling to seduce us?

December 24, 2007

The money is seductive: an “easy” $1.6 billion. That’s what gambling brought to Indiana in taxes this year. The prize might not be as big in 2008. There’s new competition. And a big drop in gambling revenue would spoil the negotiations that all the nervous Indiana politicians have been doing. Their jobs are on the line, and they know it. Hoosiers are embarrassed. They don’t like that. I have a beautiful picture of two of my children standing inside the…

Controversial Shelbyville tech park gets funding

December 19, 2007

The action was taken Monday night as part of a series of decisions on how to spend economic development income taxes, […]

Majestic Star owner Don Barden said the area near Michigan and Ohio is “underserved” for gamblers. The mayor of Gary, […]

The Colts today announced a multi-year deal to make Sprint the stadium’s east gate sponsor. Though terms of the deal were not revealed, Colts officials told IBJ […]

Former Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke and his wife, Patty, will co-chair a strategic planning committee charged with identifying service and programming priorities as well as funding opportunities for the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library over the next five years. The Jischke-led strategic planning process will begin in the first quarter of 2008. As part […]

December 14, 2007

Angel investors – wealthy people who toss money at fledgling companies – received about the average rate of return as other types of private equity investments, according to a survey of 539 U.S. angels. The average rate of return of angel investments was 2.6 times the investment over a period of 3.5 years. “This average […]

December 12, 2007

A ruling in federal court has removed several potential hurdles to the long-planned Interstate 69 extension, including one that sought to block a section through Perry Township in Indianapolis, reports the Evansville Courier & Press. The decision handed down late Monday by U.S. District Court Judge David Hamilton denied plaintiff claims that Major Moves disallowed […]

group’s 8-year-old facility, the Indiana History Center, is getting a Disneyesque makeover, as is its programs.

Six teams in running for public art award: Commission will choose two winners in January

December 10, 2007

Six finalists have pitched their visions for public art projects as part of the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ second “Great Ideas” competition, aiming to inspire and educate area residents-and encourage them to slow down and contemplate life. The contest kicked off in 2005, when two artists each got $40,000 in funding from the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission. This year, a seven-person panel will weigh the proposals and select two winners, each of whom gets a $3,000 stipend and $15,000 to…
