A federal grand jury has indicted a member of the Indianapolis City-County Council and two associates on charges that they defrauded a physician in his 70s of about $1.7 million.

The Indianapolis Star reports the indictment charges that Democratic councilman Paul Bateman and the others used a charitable foundation to obtain money from the doctor that was to be used for investments, but instead was used for vehicles, entertainment, jewelry and travel for themselves and others.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says Bateman used his council position to lend credibility to the Russell Foundation. The three face multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering.

A message seeking comment was left Wednesday for Bateman, whose council term ends Dec. 31 after he didn't seek re-election this year.
