5 thoughts on “Legislation would require Indiana districts to share property tax revenue with charters

  1. The Mind Trust and their out-of-state billionaire backers – Bill Gates, who dropped a quarter million on a recent Indianapolis Public Schools election, comes to mind – are determined to destroy Indiana’s constitutionally mandated system of public education. Strange that “conservative” politicians are dead-set on joining them in this destruction of our traditional public schools.

  2. So, the idea is to discourage anyone from voting for school referenda. People like me who would vote for additional funding for public schools don’t want it siphoned off to (often) for-profit entities with less accountability.

Similarly, the voucher situation takes my money to pay for a religious school I may not agree with. And “religious” does not always mean Christian. It could very well be that the church of Satan would want to get funding for the children of its followers.

Perhaps the answer to having real school choice is eliminating school districts themselves and having each school operate independently under state guidance. Parents would simply choose what school they wish their children to attend, regardless of location. They might have to provide their own transportation if it is too far away. Overly simplistic, I know, but something along those lines.

    1. Back in 1959, Indiana passed Indiana School Reorganization Act.

It’s odd how … we are slowly rolling back the concept of that decision.

  3. If a charter school does not want to play by the same rules (elected school board, open meetings on school processes and financial affairs, administrator and teacher accountability, et al), then the charter school has no legitimate claim to a share of the taxpayer funding derived from referenda. What is so difficult, or wrong, with that simple line of reasoning?

    1. IMHO they should be REQUIRED to play by the same rules. That is my biggest issue with the charter schools. That and that they are not held to the same standard. They should get the money for their students, but should also have to follow all the rules.
