Two Bedford parents are in a custody battle over how to handle the weight problems of their 9-year-old son. At 5 feet and
140 pounds, Eric Smoot is considered overweight but not obese by a pediatrician. His father has filed legal papers fighting
for custody, saying his son is dangerously obese and his weight could endanger his life. His mother, Darla Smoot, says the
father, Lowell Taylor, didn’t have a problem until the state raised her child custody payments from $125 to $150 a week.
A hearing between the two parties over custody is set for May.
